Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza
Tasting notes
A dry red at 14% alcohol, made from equal parts Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. Twelve months in new 225-litre barrels give it a firm oak frame and noticeable tannins. With a pH of 3.7, the acidity sits on the softer side. The winery has not published detailed tasting notes for this lot.
Pairs with
- Grilled Patagonian ribeye
- Beef short ribs cooked asado-style over open fire
- Roast leg of lamb with rosemary
- Aged hard cheeses
Where it comes from
Staphyle's Partida Limitada line is built from small micro-vinifications: lots the winery bottles once and does not repeat. The 2018 vintage of this blend ran to 5,000 bottles. The grapes come from Finca Familia Porretta in Agrelo, part of Luján de Cuyo, the district just south of Mendoza city where Argentine Malbec made its name. At 950 metres in the Andean foothills, days are sunny and nights cool, so the grapes ripen fully while keeping their freshness. The 25-year-old vines grow in clay and sand on vertical trellises. They depend on drip irrigation, as Mendoza is close to desert. Picking was done by hand in the second week of March, which is early autumn in the southern hemisphere. Here Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon share the blend equally.
Hand-picked grapes fermented for 20 days in stainless steel with traditional maceration, followed by 12 months in new 225-litre oak barrels.
