Caelum Malbec Reserva 2019
A fruit-driven, rounded Malbec from Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo, grown at 1,000 m beneath the Andes and aged a year in French oak.
Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza
Tasting notes
Ruby red with violet hints. Blueberry and ripe plum on the nose. The palate opens broad and smooth, round in body, balancing richness and freshness thanks to sweet, ripe tannins and good acidity. The finish is fresh yet well structured.
Pairs with
- Grilled beef such as Patagonian rib-eye or flank steak
- Grilled lamb chops
- Grilled sausages and chorizo
- Aged hard cheeses
- Wild mushroom dishes
Where it comes from
Caelum is a small constellation seen from the southern hemisphere; it depicts a chisel, the sculptor's tool. The winery took it as a symbol of the handwork behind its wines. The grapes for this Malbec come from Agrelo, part of Luján de Cuyo just south of the city of Mendoza and the historic heartland of Argentine Malbec. The variety arrived from France in the 19th century and, in the dry, sunny climate at the foot of the Andes, became Mendoza's signature grape. The vineyard, planted in 2000, sits at around 1,000 metres above sea level on clay soils over a stony subsoil, where cool nights help the fruit keep its freshness. Harvest is by hand, and about 12,000 bottles are made each year.
Hand-harvested and hand-sorted grapes; the wine spends 12 months in French oak barrels with regular lees stirring.
