Tasting notes

Deep, bright ruby in the glass. The nose shows dark and forest berries, cassis and plum, lifted by thyme, spice and jarilla, a resinous native shrub that grows around the vineyard. Dry and full-bodied, with firm tannins and a frank, expressive palate. The finish builds gradually and lingers.

Pairs with

  • Grilled ribeye (bife de chorizo)
  • Grilled skirt steak (entraña) or dry-aged sirloin
  • Lamb from the grill with thyme and rosemary
  • Venison with a dark berry sauce
  • Aged hard cheeses

Where it comes from

Gualtallary is a small district in Tupungato, at the northern end of the Uco Valley, a high valley south of the city of Mendoza that runs along the foot of the Andes. In recent years it has become one of South America's most closely watched wine areas. Finca Las Divas sits at 1,350 metres, where strong sunlight and cool nights let grapes ripen fully while keeping their freshness. The soils were laid down by the Las Tunas river: sandy loam threaded with river stones, low in organic matter and very free-draining, so the vines are pushed to root deep. This wine comes from a single block, Cuartel No. 5, planted with clone 169 on 1103 Paulsen rootstock. It sits at the top of Riglos' Gran range and is made by winemaker José Hernández Toso.

Aged 18 months in French oak, in both barriques and larger foudres.
