LUI Wines
Wines that follow the vineyard rather than a house style: Mauricio Vegetti Lui's exploration of terroir.
LUI Wines does not start from a single estate. Its starting point is a question: what does a particular place taste like? Winemaker Mauricio Vegetti Lui works with grape growers in more than a dozen wine regions. He sources fruit from vineyards chosen for their soil, altitude and climate, and also for the care the growers put into them. The goal is to bottle the character of each site rather than a uniform house style. Lucas Dalla Torre runs the commercial side of the project. The range is organised into lines, each with its own logic. Espontaneo by LUI is the most hands-off, made to show a place as it is with as little added as possible. Wind Blend takes its name from Mauricio's passion for windsurfing and covers young, aromatic wines with lively acidity. Úmile pays tribute to the growers and their years of work in specific vineyards. Harmony is the Gran Reserva tier, where barrel ageing is meant to frame the site rather than mask it. A sparkling collection rounds things off, covering three different production methods. Piantado carries two LUI reds from the Valle de Uco: a blend of parcels and a Single Vineyard Gran Reserva Malbec from Vista Flores. Malbec is the grape Mendoza is known for, because it ripens reliably in the dry, sunny climate at the foot of the Andes. LUI's one-place-per-bottle approach suits it well. Both wines are at their best alongside a grilled steak.
Terruño
The LUI wines we carry come from the Valle de Uco, a high valley south of the city of Mendoza where vineyards climb toward the Andes. Altitude is what defines it. In a dry, continental climate with intense sun, the height brings cool nights and a wide gap between day and night temperatures. That helps the grapes ripen fully while keeping their freshness and acidity. The Single Vineyard Gran Reserva Malbec comes from Vista Flores, one of the valley's districts. LUI does not publish soil or elevation data for these vineyards, so the specifics are on the individual wine pages.
