Tasting notes

Deep, clear and bright purple in the glass. The nose is harmonious and true to the variety, built around fresh red fruit. On the palate the naturally firm tannins are rounded off by partial oak contact, while lively acidity keeps the wine juicy.

Pairs with

  • Grilled flank (vacío) or skirt steak
  • Grilled chorizo and sausages
  • Beef empanadas
  • Pasta with meat ragù
  • Salami pizza

Where it comes from

Bodega Staphyle belongs to the Porretta family, who in 2002 began rebuilding an old winery from the 1930s in Carrodilla, Luján de Cuyo. Luján de Cuyo is one of Mendoza's historic wine districts, lying just south of the city in the foothills of the Andes. Mendoza made its name with Malbec, but Bonarda is Argentina's second most widely planted variety, and it is only partly related to the Bonarda known in Piedmont. In Argentina it gives dark, fruit-driven wines with round tannins and fresh acidity. In the Vástago de Gea, only 30% of the wine spent a short time in oak. The fruit stays in front, and the wood simply smooths the edges.

Only 30% of the wine was briefly aged in oak barrels.

Serving

Serve slightly cooler than most reds, at around 16 °C.
